In the middle ages in Europe, Islam contributed tremendously in molding the western, secular, and modern rational thought. The new Muslim presence in the old continent dates back sixty to seventy years, thus revealing a historically very short time period. It was only through centuries of discussion and conflicts of the other religious and ethnic minorities (Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox as well as Poles, Italians, and Portuguese migrants), that it was possible to feel at home and acquire some rights in the host country. How could the issues be resolved for Muslims in a span of only two or three generations?

As is the case in Europe today, one can clearly affirm that the legal system protects and guarantees the manifestation of Muslims' identity. The challenges that Muslims are finding themselves in today are more related to a minimalist interpretation, unyielding to the aforementioned legislation. A curtailed vision of the secular model and concern about the prejudice concerning Islam finds its way in this discussion about the "question of Islam" in Europe, which is a problem that originates from a certain mentality and susceptibility as much as a supposed legal incompatibility.

This brief article is dedicated to the memory of Ibn Rushd (1128-1198). On the 800 hundredth anniversary of his death, I would like to remember the contributions of this great Muslim. Abul-Waleed Muhammad Ibn Rushd was born in Cardova, Spain in 520 A.H. (1128 C.E.).
During his life time Ibn Rushd worked as a Qadi (judge) in Morocco and Spain and was for over ten years the Chief Qadi of Cardova. He was also a physician and adviser at the courts of the Moroccan Caliph and the Spanish Caliph.

These are strange and difficult times. One might have thought that, in a globalizing age, ideological debate would have focused on how we make our economic and political choices. On the horizon loomed what seemed an unavoidable, direct confrontation between the promoters of transnational, neo-liberal free market capitalism and the defenders of an economy with a human face, of an economic order inspired by another kind of globalization, based on human principles, on an ethical approach to economics and politics.
